Sustainability and care are central values on Malören – not only for the people who visit, but also for the animals, birds, and the island’s unique natural environment.

Our Environmental Work – Sustainability in the Bothnian Bay Nature Reserve At Malören Lodge, sustainability and the protection of our unique environment are of the utmost importance. Located in a nature reserve, the preservation of nature and biodiversity is at the heart of our operations. Many of our guests share this interest in nature, making our sustainability efforts even more meaningful. We actively strive to minimize our impact on Malören’s fragile environment through a range of concrete actions: Energy and Climate Since 2020, the historic Pilot Station (Lotsstugan) on Malören has been fully powered by solar energy, thanks to our investment in a solar power system. We produce only fossil-free electricity, reducing our CO₂ emissions by approximately 4,000 kg per year. Other estimates suggest our solar usage lowers our carbon footprint by as much as 6 tons of CO₂ annually. The system has a long lifespan and requires minimal maintenance, making it a sustainable long-term solution. We also use a pellet stove for heating. For our museum, which is being established in another building on the island, we are investing in an additional solar power system to ensure fossil-free energy, reduce operating costs, and increase energy efficiency. Our goal is for all our energy use to come from renewable sources. Transportation In the summer of 2021, we invested in a new boat to allow more passengers per trip, which helps reduce carbon emissions and the number of transport runs. Since April 2021, there is also a train connection to Kalix from the south of Sweden – an accessible and climate-smart travel option for our guests. Waste Management and Resource Efficiency We work actively with waste sorting and recycling. By reusing materials, we save natural resources and energy. Guests receive clear guidelines for waste separation and for using the incineration toilets – both essential for sustainable operations on the island. We also encourage guests to participate in initiatives like #ettskräpomdagen or #trashtag by providing trash bags and gloves, helping to keep the island clean. Food and Beverage We offer a selection of locally produced and vegetarian food, which reduces transport and promotes more sustainable consumption. Products All our shampoos, body lotions, shower gels, and spa products are organic to minimize the use of harmful chemicals. As a company with a holistic approach to the environment, we are continuously evaluating ways to strengthen our sustainability efforts. Our goal is to be a role model for sustainable tourism in the archipelago, and we hope our guests feel inspired when experiencing a facility that strives for self-sufficiency in an environmentally conscious way. Our commitment to sustainability not only reduces environmental impact and strengthens our financial stability – it also reinforces our identity as an eco-friendly destination. At Malören, we are deeply aware that we operate in a precious nature reserve. We kindly ask all visitors to protect the environment – for example, by not picking plants found on the island. Together, we can preserve this unique place for future generations.
